On the morning of my fathers memorial service I found myself scrolling through old photos of him and his 1967 Shelby Mustang. He had spent thirty years restoring that car and it meant everything to him. My stepmother Karen was absent from those photos and she called to say she was too overwhelmed to attend the service. Since my own car was in the shop I drove the Shelby to the church as a final tribute to him. I delivered his eulogy unaware that his legacy was being dismantled right outside the doors.
When I walked out of the church I was shocked to see an empty parking space where I had left the Shelby. In its place stood a flatbed truck alongside Karen and a stranger holding a clipboard. Before my father was even laid to rest she had sold his prized possession for just two thousand dollars. My Aunt Lucy expressed her absolute horror at the situation calling it a complete disgrace. Karen coldly defended her decision by claiming she needed the car gone immediately and insisted that my father would have understood her choice.
As I sat on the curb feeling entirely defeated a young mechanic named Pete arrived at the gravel lot holding a sealed plastic bag. He explained that during a quick inspection for the buyer they discovered hidden items under the spare tire. Karen tried to dismiss it as junk but she turned pale when she saw the contents. Inside was a thick envelope containing a receipt for fifteen thousand dollars paid to a luxury cruise line and a handwritten letter from my father. He wrote that he knew Karen would eventually sell the car.
My father explained in his letter that the cruise was a surprise attempt to save their marriage and he urged me to keep my heart generous while splitting his estate equally with Karen. Overcome with regret Karen broke down in tears realizing what she had carelessly given away. Moved by the situation Pete offered to cancel the transaction since the paperwork was not yet finalized. I immediately instructed him to freeze the sale and told Karen there would be no more secret deals. With Aunt Lucy by my side I finally took control of our family.
