My nineteen year old daughter Emily had always worked incredibly hard for her success. While attending Carnegie Mellon she built a profitable tutoring business and secured a competitive software research position. Her dedication allowed her to save a significant amount of money at a very young age. We attended a family dinner with my parents along with my sister Lorraine and her husband Pete. They brought their twenty three year old son Kyle who had been unemployed for years and frequently relied on financial support from his parents. My family always treated the impressive achievements of my daughter as an embarrassing accident that somehow overshadowed her older cousin.
During the meal my father suddenly announced that the financial success of my daughter was creating a difficult situation for the family. Lorraine claimed that Kyle felt discouraged and humiliated because someone younger was earning so much more than him. My father then stated that the only fair solution was for Emily to hand over sixty seven thousand dollars to help Kyle start a business. They expected my teenage daughter to sacrifice her hard earned savings simply to protect the fragile ego of her cousin. When my mother tried to convince her that this was the right thing to do I felt an overwhelming sense of anger and immediately stood up to defend my child. I firmly told them that my daughter would never pay for the lazy choices made by their son.
Instead of arguing my daughter quietly placed her phone on the table to reveal a hidden folder of digital evidence. She displayed numerous messages showing that Lorraine and Kyle had been secretly begging her for money and professional favors for months. My father demanded to take the phone but Emily bravely refused to let him hide the truth. She calmly pointed out that a planned dinner designed to pressure a teenager out of her savings was not a simple request for help. As the room erupted into loud accusations and tears from my parents we simply walked out the door and left their ridiculous financial demands behind us. I stopped the car down the street to let her cry and promised her she never owed anyone a smaller version of herself.
Over the next few weeks my relatives attempted to alter the story and send guilt trips but my daughter bravely blocked all their phone numbers. She returned to her university classes with a renewed sense of clarity and completely stopped apologizing for her impressive work ethic. Years later I proudly watched her graduate at the top of her class surrounded only by friends and mentors who truly supported her. My parents refused to attend the ceremony because we never gave in to their manipulative waiting games. We celebrated her graduation with a quiet dinner where I realized she had built both a wonderful career and the strength to walk away from people who tried to tear her down.
