I caught a car doing 88 in a 55 zone and expected a typical traffic stop with normal excuses. The driver kept going for a while before finally pulling over to the shoulder. I approached the vehicle feeling irritated and instructed the man to turn off his engine. He was an older man in a faded delivery shirt who looked completely exhausted and gripped the steering wheel in sheer panic. Instead of handing over his license he explained he had received an urgent call from the hospital regarding his daughter Emily. He informed me she was experiencing severe labor complications and was asking for him. He missed earlier calls while working his delivery route and was desperate to reach her.
I looked at the heavy traffic and realized he would never make it through all the red lights on his own. He was the only family Emily had left since her mother passed away and the father of the baby was gone. Knowing a fast drive alone could result in a terrible accident I ordered him to follow my cruiser closely. I contacted dispatch to authorize a priority medical escort to County Memorial hospital and promised to explain my actions later. We raced through the busy streets with my sirens blaring while I constantly checked my mirrors to ensure he was right behind me. We made incredible time navigating through the dense traffic and arrived safely at the emergency room.
The man parked hastily and ran inside the building before his car fully settled. I planned to return to my patrol duties but found myself waiting in the parking lot with my engine running. A few minutes later a nurse came outside to find me and explained the severity of the situation. She told me Emily was facing a major medical emergency and refused to allow doctors to perform a necessary procedure until her father arrived. She explained the man made it just in time to comfort his daughter and help her through the process. The nurse then encouraged me to come inside the hospital to see them.
I followed the nurse down the bright hallways to a recovery room where the exhausted father stood by his daughter. Emily looked completely drained but safely held a baby wrapped in a yellow blanket. They expressed their deep gratitude to me for making sure he arrived when she needed him most. The room filled with relief and joy as the newborn stretched a tiny hand out of the warm blanket. Emily asked her father to choose the name for the child since he always showed up for her. He looked down at his new granddaughter with tears in his eyes and decided to name her Hope.
