My wife passed away so suddenly that my entire world shattered in a single day. She had been standing in our kitchen just that morning getting ready and reminding me to pick up groceries on my way home from work. By the very next morning she was permanently gone and left an echoing silence in our home. After her funeral ended our house became an entirely unrecognizable place to me. Every single object remained exactly where she had left it including her favorite cup on the counter and her clothes hanging in the closet. Her books still rested on the nightstand beside our bed but it felt as though all the air had been sucked out of the rooms. Her son was still living there with me in that suffocating space. When I first met my wife he was only six years old and she rarely mentioned his biological father who had vanished long ago. Over the years I paid for his schooling and bought his clothes and took him to appointments. Most of our friends considered me a wonderful and supportive stepfather to this boy.
Deep down my feelings were vastly different from what everyone else saw on the surface. I never truly accepted him as my own biological child but I tried hard to hide my true feelings while my wife was still alive. She loved her son more than anything else in the world and I knew that causing him any pain would only hurt her deeply. Everything shifted drastically after she died because I found myself unable to even look at the boy. He was sixteen years old at the time of her passing and he coped by spending whole days locked in his bedroom. He rarely spoke to me and often just stared blankly out of the living room window. His quiet grief irritated me immensely because I completely failed to understand that we were both mourning the exact same loss. One evening our mounting tension finally erupted into a massive argument over something entirely meaningless. Instead of offering him comfort I commanded him to pack his belongings and leave my house forever. I told him he meant nothing to me and I did not care about his future. He remained completely silent and simply packed an old backpack before walking out the front door twenty minutes later without a single protest.
I made absolutely no effort to stop him from walking away into the dark night. A few months after he departed I decided to sell the house so I could completely escape those painful memories. I relocated to an entirely different neighborhood and started a brand new business to build a completely different life for myself. Ten long years passed by without any contact between us. I occasionally wondered where the boy had ended up but I never once made a real effort to search for him. My quiet life was abruptly interrupted one afternoon when an unfamiliar woman contacted me by telephone. She invited me to attend an upcoming art exhibition opening on Saturday and explained that someone specifically requested my presence there. I was fully prepared to decline her invitation until she mentioned the name of a highly successful and famous artist hosting the event. I asked her why I was being invited and she paused before asking if I wanted to know what had happened to the boy I abandoned a decade ago. My hands instantly went cold as I realized the immense weight of her words and I knew I had to attend the event.
