My Fiancé Abandoned His Ten Children But Left A Shocking Secret

Posted on August 25, 2026 By Andrew Wright

I was thirty two years old when I met Robert and his ten children at a local grocery store. He was a kind widower raising a large family on his own, and my heart softened when his toddler daughter Sophie reached out to me. We fell deeply in love, and I embraced his entire family, including Amanda, Derrick, Sue, the twins Jacob and David, and the others, as my own. Our bond grew so strong that Robert proposed just six months later during a family dinner. My mother Helen strongly disapproved of my choice and warned me that taking on ten children would ruin my future. Despite her objections, I joyfully planned our wedding and helped the children prepare for our new life. However, just one week before we were supposed to marry, I woke up to a quiet house and discovered that Robert had completely vanished. He left behind nothing but a brief note on the kitchen table stating that he could not go through with our marriage, offering no explanation and making no mention of his children.

My entire family pressured me to surrender the children to the foster care system, insisting I was too young to sacrifice my life. I listened to their advice but realized I loved those children far too much to let them go. I went to the county office and signed the emergency guardianship papers, beginning a lengthy legal process that eventually made all ten children officially mine. The first few years were incredibly difficult as I worked grueling days at a fabric warehouse and spent nights sewing school uniforms to keep us afloat. The older children took on household chores to help me survive the overwhelming exhaustion of single motherhood. A few men showed interest in dating me over the years, but they always disappeared the moment they learned I was raising ten children. I eventually abandoned any hope of romance and dedicated my entire existence to homework, bedtime prayers, and making sure my children felt loved, even though my parents remained angry and eventually stopped speaking to me.

Decades passed, and I never regretted my decision as I watched every single one of them grow into successful and compassionate adults. Amanda became a nurse, Derrick opened an auto shop, Sue started teaching, the twins became engineers, and Sophie became a social worker to help children just like I had helped her. Our family tradition was to gather at my house every Saturday, filling the rooms with grandchildren, loud conversations, and the smell of home cooked food. It was during one of these chaotic Saturday gatherings, exactly thirty years after Robert vanished, that a man in a gray suit knocked on my front door. He introduced himself as Mr. Johnson and explained that he had been an attorney for Robert. He handed me a thick envelope with my name written in handwriting I still recognized after all those years. He explained that Robert recently passed away and gave strict instructions for this letter to be delivered to me on this precise day, and then he quietly returned to his car.
