Actress Marlo Thomas paid a poignant tribute to her late husband, talk show star Phil Donahue. Donahue died at the age of 88 from a protracted illness, surrounded by his loved ones, including his wife of 44 years, Thomas, his sister, children, grandkids, and even his beloved golden dog, Charlie.
In a lengthy Instagram post, Thomas emphasized her anguish.
Phil Donahue was well-known for anchoring the Emmy-winning show “The Phil Donahue Show,” which ran for an amazing 28 years. Throughout his career, he has had the privilege of interviewing celebrities such as Muhammad Ali, Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, and Jamie Lee Curtis. In fact, he was the first to interview Nelson Mandela upon his release from jail in 1990. Donahue also made history by becoming the first American talk show host to record a show in the Soviet Union.
Marlo Thomas appeared as a guest on Phil Donahue’s show in 1977; the couple married in 1980. In her Instagram caption, Thomas stated that they fell in love at first sight. Despite not having children together, they treasured their blended family, which included Donahue’s five children from a previous marriage.
Their book, “What Makes a Marriage Last: 40 Celebrated Couples Share with Us the Secrets to a Happy Life,” chronicles their lasting love story. Thomas said, “Phil and I might have become impatient and missed each other when younger. But when we grew older, we trusted our feelings and made the effort.”
Marlo Thomas also thanked the public for their love and support and their Instagram followers for following their trip. She signed off, wishing everyone excellent health and many more lovely days spent with loved ones.
