Standing beside her was her friend Maya, sporting the exact same uneven pixie cut. During a segment where students shared messages of gratitude, Emily stepped forward to address the audience. She recounted an incident where older girls had maliciously stuck a large amount of gum into the hair of Maya, leaving her devastated. Walking out to the parking lot later, I spoke honestly with Linda and admitted my jealousy over her close bond with my daughter. When I found Emily waiting by the doors, she was surprised to see me and worried about my boss.
