I was thirty four weeks pregnant and suffering from severe sleep deprivation due to constant physical discomfort and a cramped apartment. My restless nights began to greatly irritate my husband Ryan who claimed he needed uninterrupted rest for his job. One night in August at three in the morning he reached his breaking point and tossed me my car keys. He insisted that because he paid our rent I needed to go sleep in our vehicle so he could rest. I was too exhausted and ashamed to fight back so I began carrying my pillow down three flights of stairs every night.
Sleeping in the back seat of a small car during the late summer heat was miserable and painful. Every morning around half past six Ryan would send a text message granting me permission to return upstairs. He acted completely normal during the day making breakfast and whistling as if nothing was wrong. I kept this humiliating routine a secret from my sister my best friend Kayla and even my physician Doctor Patel when she expressed concern about my rising blood pressure. I convinced myself that my husband was just stressed and that my quiet suffering was somehow normal.
Everything changed when my mother in law Dana arrived at our parking lot just past two in the morning because she was worried after Ryan ignored her messages. She was horrified to find me curled up in the back seat of my vehicle. I broke down and explained the entire situation regarding his demands and my nightly banishment to the parking lot. Dana was deeply disappointed in her son and instructed me to wait while she left to retrieve something from her home. She returned shortly after with a heavy package and insisted we go upstairs together to confront him.
When Ryan opened the door Dana handed him a folding camping cot and ordered him to sleep in the hallway while I took the bed. My husband protested by claiming authority over the apartment but his mother quickly silenced him with a shocking revelation. She explained that she had been secretly paying most of our rent for two years and threatened to stop the financial support immediately if I ever slept in the car again. Ryan spent the next three nights on the cot before apologizing and agreeing to counseling while I finally enjoyed the safe comfortable rest I deserved.
