I returned from a seven day work trip to find my twelve year old daughter completely devastated. My parents had been watching her and they greeted me with fake smiles while my daughter looked like she had aged five years. During our quiet drive home my daughter finally revealed that she had been kicked off her dance team and uninvited from the birthday party of her friend Sophie. She confessed through tears that my parents had accused her of stealing dance shoes belonging to her cousin Belle. My parents then went to her school and told the coach and other mothers that my child was a thief.
I, Sarah, immediately contacted my parents to demand an explanation for their terrible actions. They admitted they found the missing shoes in their own hallway but still blamed my daughter because they believed she needed to learn respect. Realizing they were trying to ruin her social life I refused to let them destroy her reputation. I scheduled an appointment with the former lawyer of my late grandfather to seek professional help for my daughter and myself. The lawyer drafted official letters to the school to demand written proof of the accusations and warned my parents to stop spreading false claims.
During our meeting the lawyer revealed that my grandfather had established a trust fund for my daughter worth forty three thousand dollars. This trust included annual distributions of two thousand five hundred dollars and larger payouts at ages sixteen and eighteen. My parents had kept this a secret and had already withdrawn eighteen thousand dollars without permission to fund the lifestyle of my sister Vanessa and her daughter Belle. They accused my daughter of theft to trigger a misconduct clause in the trust that would allow them to legally take the rest of the money. Meanwhile my daughter bravely recorded a private conversation with Belle where her cousin confessed that she simply misplaced the shoes and our grandparents forced her to lie.
I presented the recorded confession to the school administration and they immediately cleared the record of my daughter. The coach invited her back to the dance team and the vicious rumors quickly faded away as Belle transferred to a different school. The legal investigation forced my parents to repay the stolen eighteen thousand dollars back into the trust fund. Because they did not have the cash they had to sell their house and move into a small rental property. I took over as the official trustee and cut all contact with my parents to permanently protect my daughter.
