For four years of marriage I endured my husband Garrett and his demanding family who never respected my boundaries or my career as a graphic designer. His mother Lorraine dictated every aspect of our lives and constantly demeaned my work from home schedule. Things reached a breaking point when I discovered Garrett had secretly transferred almost forty eight thousand dollars from our joint bank account to pay his mother and his sister Tabitha for their personal expenses and debt. I immediately opened a separate bank account for my income and began planning my exit strategy. My decision was cemented when I found text messages on his phone revealing a cruel plan orchestrated by Lorraine. She instructed Garrett to wake me up early on my thirty fifth birthday to cook and clean for them as a test of my obedience as a wife. Sure enough at five in the morning on my birthday Garrett poured a bucket of freezing ice water over my head in bed to force me awake before his family arrived.
I did not scream or argue with him when the freezing water soaked my pajamas and the bedsheets. I calmly took a hot shower and dressed while Garrett panicked about his family arriving. Little did he know I had spent the previous week consulting with family lawyer Rebecca Vance who confirmed I could file for divorce and keep my premarital apartment. I had already hired a locksmith to change the main door lock and spent Thursday afternoon carefully packing all of his clothes and personal documents into heavy suitcases. As Garrett demanded I get to work cleaning the kitchen I simply pointed to his packed luggage by the front door and ordered him to leave my property immediately. I confronted him about reading his secret text messages and exposed his utter inability to stand up to his mother. Before he could fully process that his marriage was over Tabitha sent a message saying they were coming up the elevator with her three children.
I dragged his heavy suitcases into the hallway just as the elevator doors opened to reveal Lorraine and Tabitha carrying breakfast pastries. They were completely shocked to find Garrett standing outside with his luggage and demanded that I let them inside my home to celebrate my birthday. I refused to open the door and explained clearly through the wood that I knew all about their malicious plan to test my obedience. Lorraine immediately tried to deny everything while blaming me for ruining the family but I held my ground and refused to engage in their manipulation. When they started pounding aggressively on my door and refused to leave I called the emergency operator and reported the domestic assault along with the ongoing disturbance. Hearing me speak to the dispatcher finally caused them to panic and try to flee but two police officers soon arrived to supervise Garrett loading his belongings into his mother’s car. Garrett begged for another chance but I told him I was walking away from his endless refusal to establish boundaries with his mother.
