I was twenty eight weeks pregnant when my husband hosted his family for a holiday dinner gathering at our apartment. His sister Melissa had always treated me with harsh criticism and constantly claimed I was exaggerating my pregnancy fatigue for attention. After I spent the entire day cooking a massive meal she followed me into the kitchen to complain about my cleaning efforts. When I stepped onto the balcony to retrieve some chilled drinks she deliberately slammed the sliding glass door and locked me out in the freezing cold. The freezing wind quickly cut through my thin sweater as my hands went completely numb from the dropping temperature. I repeatedly pounded on the glass and desperately begged for help while watching the family casually enjoying their evening inside the warm apartment. At the hospital the medical staff rushed into action to treat my frightening symptoms of premature labor caused by the freezing exposure. Nurses attached monitors and administered specialized medication to stabilize the early contractions while giving treatments to protect the lungs of our unborn baby. My husband stayed tightly by my side and completely abandoned his lifelong habit of making excuses for his sister and her terrible behavior. When she attempted to visit the hospital he firmly confronted her in the hallway and permanently banned her from ever approaching our family again. He clearly explained that her reckless cruelty nearly caused a permanent tragedy and refused to accept her tearful excuses.
Our beautiful daughter was eventually born several weeks early but proved strong enough to thrive after a brief stay in the neonatal unit. Holding my tiny baby against my chest solidified my promise to never allow anyone who endangered her to remain in our lives. My sister in law sent countless messages and dramatic apologies but none of her empty words could erase the terrifying reality of her actions. I learned that sharing a family tree never justifies accepting cruel mistreatment or lowering basic boundaries of human safety.
