I am seven months pregnant with my second child and prefer to stay home and rest. My best friend Ava convinced me to attend a local pottery painting party to relax and make decorations for the new nursery. She even arranged for my husband Malcolm to stay home and watch our older daughter Tess so I could have a carefree evening. I reluctantly agreed to go and soon found myself sitting among a large group of women chatting about their personal lives and childbirth experiences.
As the evening progressed a stranger at our table began sharing a frustrating story about her unreliable boyfriend. She explained that he abruptly left her on the Fourth of July because his sister in law named Olivia went into labor. My heart stopped because my name is Olivia and I gave birth to Tess on that exact holiday. The woman continued explaining that her boyfriend later missed the birth of their own son six months later because he claimed he was babysitting his niece Tess.
I felt completely sick as I showed the stranger a photograph of my husband and daughter on my cellular phone. The woman stared in absolute horror and confirmed that the man in my picture was also the father of her child. The cheerful atmosphere of the art studio instantly faded as I realized my husband was secretly living a double life and raising another baby. I felt entirely suffocated by the shocking betrayal and immediately left the building with my friend to process the devastating truth.
Later that evening I confronted Malcolm at our home and he exhaustedly confessed to the prolonged affair and his secret child. He offered no valid excuses for almost missing the birth of our daughter to be with his mistress or for deceiving both of our families.
