Four months after walking out on our twenty two year marriage for another woman, my husband Gary appeared on my front porch carrying two suitcases and his golf clubs. He had the nerve to act completely normal and casually ask what I was preparing for dinner. He completely ignored the reality that abandoning your family for a sudden fresh start meant you forfeited the right to just stroll back inside when things went wrong. I stood in the doorway looking at the man I had loved for over two decades and felt a strange sense of calm wash over me instead of the devastation I had endured during those first few weeks alone. Gary confidently explained that his girlfriend had thrown him out and he was simply coming home because she called him selfish. He expected me to offer sympathy and help him drag his bags into the house. Instead I informed him that he would be eating dinner wherever his next address happened to be. He treated my resistance like a joke while claiming he had learned his lesson during his brief three and a half month absence from our shared life.
He had no idea that my entire perspective had shifted during the time he was away. I had cried myself to sleep initially but eventually I started taking accounting classes and realized living alone was quite peaceful. I told him to wait outside for his proper welcome home and went inside to call my neighbor Linda. I reminded Linda of her promise to help me if Gary ever returned and she immediately agreed to come over. When I returned to the porch I informed Gary that I had already packed the rest of his belongings into two boxes waiting in the garage. He was shocked to realize I was making him leave and complained about being embarrassed in front of the neighbors. He tried to sweet talk his way inside while peering past me to notice I had painted the kitchen cabinets blue, a color he always hated, and installed new locks on the doors. He acted deeply offended that I would modify a house he abandoned. I left him standing outside to fetch him a glass of water while a sinking feeling started to settle over the strange afternoon.
While I was in the kitchen Linda called with bizarre news about a connection between Gary and her sister Carol. Linda explained that Carol was currently hosting a friend named Rachel who had just kicked out her lying boyfriend. This man had claimed to be divorced for two years and the timing aligned perfectly with Gary suddenly needing a place to stay. I told Linda to find a photograph to confirm her suspicions while I returned to the porch with the water. I interrogated Gary about what exactly he told his girlfriend regarding our marital status and he nervously admitted he only told her we were separated. My phone buzzed with a message from Linda confirming that Rachel was indeed Gary’s girlfriend and they were all coming over immediately. I watched the color drain from Gary’s face as I refused his panicked requests to move our conversation inside behind closed doors. Minutes later Linda pulled her car into the driveway and two women stepped out to join her on my lawn. Gary dropped his suitcase handle in pure terror as his former girlfriend marched directly toward us.
