Rachel stared at Gary with complete disgust and immediately started exposing the massive web of lies he had constructed to gain her sympathy. She revealed that Gary had been using his middle name James and completely fabricated a story about me being a controlling ex wife. He had told Rachel that I refused to let him see his teenage son even though our son is actually twenty four years old and moved out three years ago. Worse still he claimed I had abandoned his sick mother when in reality I spent six months driving her to chemotherapy appointments every single Thursday. Gary stood there silently as Rachel realized he had villainized his loyal wife just to play the victim. The most painful revelation came when Rachel shared that Gary first professed his love to her on March eighth. That date was our twenty second wedding anniversary and I had spent that exact evening eating alone while keeping his dinner warm on the stove because he claimed to be stuck at a mandatory work event. Rachel was horrified to learn the truth of his absolute betrayal and cold manipulation.
Gary desperately reached out and apologized while begging to come inside, but his true motivation was completely transparent. Rachel held the lease to her apartment and Gary simply needed free accommodation because he was broke and wanted to avoid paying for a hotel. I refused his fake apologies and informed him that he could not enter the house because it belonged entirely to me now. I reminded him that he had signed the property transfer documents upon leaving and the buyout paperwork was finalized last month. He was completely stunned to realize I had legally locked him out of his old life and his safety net was gone forever. Rachel apologized to me for her unwitting role in his deception and returned to Linda’s car while Gary angrily asked if I was happy now. I simply closed the door and watched through the window as he struggled to pack his belongings into his car. Later that evening Linda brought over cider and a pink cake to celebrate my reclaimed porch. We ate dessert under my blue cabinets as I shed a few tears of pure relief for finally choosing myself.
