How I Turned a Pool Noodle into a Custom Backyard Light

Posted on February 4, 2026 By Andrew Wright

I found that I could skip the expensive lighting kits and build something better using just a pool noodle and a set of LEDs. By threading a string of battery-powered lights through the hollow center of a foam noodle, I created a soft-glow diffuser that hides the individual bulbs. It’s a simple trick that turns a cheap summer toy into a professional-looking light bar, providing a steady, muted glow that brightens up dark corners without being blinding.

I can change the entire atmosphere of my patio just by swapping out the colors of the foam or the type of lights I use. Using a white or tan noodle with warm white LEDs gives the backyard a clean, modern aesthetic that looks like custom architectural lighting. When I’m hosting a more casual get-together, I use bright blue or green noodles with colored lights to give the space a high-energy glow. It’s a tool that lets me experiment with different “vibes” for just a few dollars.

Because pool noodles are so light and durable, I’ve been able to place them in spots where traditional lights wouldn’t work. I’ve lined my walkways with them to create a safe path, and I’ve even tucked them behind my garden bushes to add a hidden ambient glow to the foliage. They are even waterproof enough to float in a pool or pond, creating a magical lighting effect on the surface of the water. This versatility makes them a great tool for adding depth to any outdoor layout.

This project proved to me that you don’t need a huge budget to make a space feel intentional and designed. It’s become a regular part of how I prep my yard for the summer, involving everyone in the house to help decide on the best placements and colors. In the end, I’ve realized that a simple DIY tool like this can do more to make a home feel inviting than a dozen store-bought lanterns ever could. It’s about taking something basic and making it work for the specific way I want to live.
