Later that evening Grant came to my room looking exhausted and begged for a chance to explain his disappearance. I agreed to meet him in a public courtyard near the lobby after Miles had gone to sleep. He confessed that his business had been failing and he had secretly borrowed money from dangerous private investors. When he could no longer repay the massive debts he became convinced that faking his death was the only way to protect our family. I listened with bitter disbelief as he admitted that his initial choice was driven by fear but his decision to stay away for years was because he was ashamed to face the consequences. I reminded him of the pure terror I experienced dealing with mysterious bills while raising a devastated child completely alone. Our conversation was interrupted when Sienna walked into the courtyard and I plainly revealed the true identity and family history of my husband which prompted her to immediately end their relationship and walk away forever.
The next morning I had to explain to my heartbroken son that his father was truly alive but had made terrible choices out of fear rather than a lack of love. I allowed Grant to meet us in the hotel cafe where he fell to his knees in tears and apologized to Miles while promising to never disappear again. Before we flew back home Grant asked if there was any chance we could eventually rebuild our marriage after he faced his financial crimes. I firmly told him that I hoped he would become a dependable father for Miles but I would never allow him to become my husband again. I explained that I fully forgave him in order to release myself from a lifetime of anger but forgiveness did not mean giving him back his place in my life. As Miles slept against my shoulder on the flight back north I looked out the window and felt an incredible sense of freedom. I was no longer a grieving widow waiting for answers but a strong independent woman who had finally found her own peace.
