For the first time in our eleven years together I firmly grabbed the metal bedrail and explicitly refused to comply with his unreasonable demands. Uttering that single word of defiance established a significant personal boundary and momentarily stunned him into loosening his painful grip on my arm. His brief shock quickly morphed into absolute fury as he forcefully shoved me back down against the mattress with enough aggression to knock the breath out of my lungs. Blinding pain erupted from my fractured ribs and spread across my torso leaving me gasping for air while the medical monitor shrieked in continuous alarm. He hovered over my helpless body with a bright red face and loudly warned me never to talk back to him again. My medical chart clearly displayed a fall risk warning and detailed my need for physical assistance just to change positions safely. Every nurse understood I was a vulnerable patient but my husband only viewed me as a broken inconvenience.
Gasping for breath I finally understood that my husband believed my body and my choices belonged completely to him as long as I remained useful. I stared past his threatening posture toward the open doorway where the regular hospital routines continued peacefully unaware of the terrifying situation unfolding nearby. I thought about my daughter Emma sitting at home trusting that her father was lovingly helping the nurses take care of her mother. Surviving an impact strong enough to shatter my legs would mean absolutely nothing if I allowed myself to return to a miserable life where love required silence. I realized that going home could no longer mean returning to the exact same oppressive rules and allowing my child to learn that a woman must accept cruel mistreatment. I tightened my desperate grip on the cold metal rail and silently vowed that I would never let this man drag me out of my bed. Just as he menacingly drew his arm backward again to continue his assault the silver handle on my hospital door suddenly began to turn.
