Why A Cruel Thanksgiving Joke Inspired My Two Month Portuguese Escape

Posted on October 30, 2026 By Andrew Wright

My neighbor Ellen happily agreed to watch my house, allowing me to pack the old gray sweater belonging to Leonard along with my watercolor supplies for the flight to Lisbon. Upon arriving in Obidos the rental manager Ines guided me to a beautiful little property featuring whitewashed walls, blue shutters, and a peaceful courtyard where I could finally breathe. I spent my first week wandering the narrow cobblestone lanes, drinking coffee at local bakeries, and savoring the quiet anonymity of a place where nobody expected me to wash a skillet or serve a casserole. Christmas arrived with a gentle drizzle, and instead of sweating over a crowded stove I enjoyed a quiet restaurant meal and a warm video call with Joanna, followed by a gentle holiday greeting from Derek and Cassandra. Throughout January I joined a small watercolor class with other travelers to paint crooked lanes and share rich memories of my past that had nothing to do with running errands. I realized that my identity was vastly deeper than the tasks I performed for others, and I cherished every peaceful morning reading in my private Portuguese courtyard.

Returning to Raleigh felt different this time because I no longer viewed my quiet house as a space that needed to be filled with endless chores or family obligations. The following Sunday Derek invited me over for a simple family dinner, and for the first time in years I arrived empty handed and left without washing a single dish. Cassandra and I shared a pleasant evening discussing my art classes and photographs, slowly establishing a new foundation built on mutual respect rather than assumed servitude. I eventually framed one of my imperfect watercolor paintings of a blue shuttered window in Obidos and hung it in my hallway as a daily reminder of my own worth. I still love my family deeply and cherish every moment with my grandchildren, but I finally understand that demonstrating love does not require me to shrink my own existence. That painful Thanksgiving insult ultimately gave me the courage to stop being merely useful to my children and start demanding to be truly valued for the woman I have always been.
