The Easy Kitchen Trick That Makes Stained Cutting Boards Look Brand New

Posted on November 26, 2025 By Andrew Wright

White plastic cutting boards are kitchen workhorses, perfect for everything from veggies to raw meat—but they stain so easily. Tomatoes, carrots, turmeric, beets… all those bright ingredients leave behind stubborn marks that make your board look old long before its time. Even regular washing can’t always keep up. Thankfully, my ma taught me a simple, no-scrub trick that restores a stained board in minutes—bright, clean, and odor-free.

The reason these boards get so discolored is that plastic is slightly porous. It absorbs oils, pigments, and juices, trapping smells and stains beneath the surface. But with just baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap, you can reverse all that damage. Sprinkle the board with baking soda, pour on enough hydrogen peroxide to form a paste, and add a few drops of dish soap. Let it bubble and lift the stains for 10–15 minutes—no scrubbing needed. Rinse well, dry completely, and you’ll see the stains fade dramatically and the odors disappear.

This mixture works beautifully because each ingredient has a job: baking soda lifts discoloration, hydrogen peroxide brightens and disinfects, and dish soap cuts through oils and residue. Together, they refresh the board with almost zero effort. With a quick wash after each use, gentle sponges instead of abrasive pads, and occasional natural sanitizing with lemon or vinegar, your cutting board will stay fresher for far longer.

So next time your white cutting board looks tired and stained, skip the harsh cleaners. This easy, mom-approved method brings it back to life in minutes—simple, cheap, and incredibly effective.
