I climbed onto the small crooked bench beside the playhouse and reached for the loose roof panel, only to hear a car door slam shut from the front street. Melissa came running through the side gate calling my name, Phoebe, and begging me to stop just as I pulled the wooden panel back and dragged out a large black canvas bag wedged against the roof beam. She reached the playhouse out of breath, demanding that I hand the bag over while insisting that I did not understand the situation, so I shouted for Ethan to get away from the kitchen window where he was watching us. Melissa grabbed my wrist as I tried to open the zipper on the grass, pleading with me not to let Ethan see what was inside, right as the sound of approaching police sirens echoed down our street. Looking briefly relieved, she sank down onto the wooden bench just as two uniformed officers came through the gate and separated us. While one officer guided me inside to comfort a trembling Ethan, the second officer opened the canvas bag in the yard, revealing stacks of photographs, envelopes, a small silver camera, and a bundle of children’s clothing.
Inside the kitchen, Ethan explained to me and the officer that he had accidentally caught Melissa hiding the bag two days earlier, and she had made him promise to stay quiet because the bag belonged to a bad man in a gray truck who watched the school bus. The officer soon confirmed that the man in the truck was actually Melissa’s older brother, Darren, who had recently been released from jail and had started following the local bus route to photograph children and record their home addresses and schedules. After spotting his truck and confronting him, a terrified Melissa had stolen the bag from his vehicle at a gas station and hidden it in our playhouse, fearing he would search her own apartment first. Because Jacob the bus driver had seen Melissa arguing with the man in the gray truck the previous day, he had mistakenly assumed she was helping him and decided to warn me. Police officers swiftly located and arrested Darren sitting in his truck just two streets away, and although I understood Melissa’s fear and Ethan forgave her for making him keep a frightening secret, I had to let her go for putting my family in danger, leaving Ethan and me with a lifelong promise to never keep secrets that cause fear.
