At thirty four weeks pregnant and completely alone, Ariel faced mounting financial disasters. The father of her baby, Lee, abandoned her when she decided to keep the child, and her bank was initiating foreclosure on her house. On a very hot mid August Tuesday, Ariel noticed her eighty two year old neighbor struggling outside. Mrs Higgins was hunched over an old lawnmower, trying to cut grass that had grown incredibly high. Despite her own swollen ankles and exhausting problems, Ariel left her porch and took over the heavy yard work for the elderly widow.
Ariel pushed through dizziness and heavy sweating to finish the yard work while the older woman watched with deep appreciation. After finishing the chore, the two women sat on the porch together to share a cold glass of lemonade. The elderly widow gently asked Ariel who was supporting her during this difficult time. Early the next morning, flashing emergency lights woke Ariel, who found Sheriff Holt outside her neighbors house. The sheriff explained that Mrs Higgins had peacefully passed away earlier that dawn. He then handed Ariel a thick envelope that the widow had placed in her mailbox right before she died. Inside the envelope, Ariel found the deed to her own home along with a bank document stamped to show her mortgage was completely paid. Mrs Higgins had secretly used her late husbands savings to erase the massive debt after spotting a dropped foreclosure notice.
Tucked inside those legal papers was a heartfelt note explaining that the elderly woman wanted to reward Ariel for showing her genuine kindness. The widow wrote that women must protect each other and playfully suggested naming the baby Will or Mabel. All of the crushing anxiety Ariel had carried for months completely disappeared, replaced by deep gratitude. When Lee eventually called after hearing rumors about her sudden financial luck, Ariel simply ignored her phone. She sat peacefully on her porch that evening, softly promising to name her little girl Mabel while looking toward a secure future.
