Ethan and I were married for eight years and felt our relationship was very steady. We had survived many personal challenges like miscarriages and job losses together over the years. One night Ethan told me he was moving into the guest room because my snoring was keeping him awake. He said he needed to catch up on his sleep and promised the move would only be temporary. At first I believed him and even made jokes about his sensitive hearing while he packed his things. However he soon started locking the guest room door every night and showering in a different bathroom. I felt embarrassed about my supposed snoring and tried using nose strips and special pillows to fix the problem. My husband remained kind but he seemed to be following a rehearsed script whenever we spoke.
I eventually visited a specialist and decided to record myself sleeping to see if my snoring was truly that loud. When I played the recording the next morning I heard nothing but silence for the first hour of the night. At exactly two seventeen in the morning the recording captured the sound of footsteps in the hallway and the guest room door opening. I heard Ethan sitting at his desk and the steady sound of typing for a long period of time. I realized my husband was not actually sleeping but was working on something secret late into the night. My heart began to race as I wondered why he felt the need to lie to me about his rest. I decided to confront him after finding a spare key hidden behind the cookbooks in the kitchen.
I used the key to open the guest room door at two in the morning and found Ethan sitting at his laptop. There were many papers and takeout containers scattered across the desk while he worked under a single lamp. He was startled when I entered and he tried to tell me that I would not understand his actions. He eventually turned the screen toward me and showed me a photograph of a twelve year old boy named Caleb. Ethan explained that a former girlfriend named Laura had recently contacted him to reveal he had a son. He told me that Laura was suffering from a serious illness and could no longer work to support the child. My husband had been taking on extra freelance writing jobs at night to send money for medical bills and school expenses.
Ethan admitted he was afraid of losing me if he told the truth about his secret family. He felt guilty about bringing up a child after our own struggles with infertility and chose to hide the news. I told him that he should have trusted me with the truth instead of locking me out of his life. We decided to meet Caleb together at a local library two weeks later to begin building a new relationship. The boy looked remarkably like Ethan and we spent the afternoon talking about his interest in robotics over lunch. I realized that our marriage could only survive if we chose to be completely honest with each other from now on. Ethan moved back into our bedroom that night and we promised to face every future challenge together as a team.
