My husband and I always appeared to be the perfect couple to our friends. We shared a calm life together. However, everything shifted about two years ago when my husband started disappearing frequently. He claimed he was going to a nearby town to help his mother with chores. She lived alone on the outskirts of a small community twenty minutes away from us. At first, his desire to fulfill his duty as a son seemed noble. Soon his visits increased from once every few weeks to nearly every day after work. On weekends, he stayed there from morning until late at night. My friends started asking questions about why he spent so much time away. They suggested he was hiding something and encouraged me to follow him.
I decided to follow him but kept my plans secret. One Saturday morning, he told me he was heading to his mother’s house and would return the next day. I watched him drive away before getting into my own car. I knew his hometown was small and everyone recognized each other. I drove slowly and kept a safe distance until I reached the house. I parked where I would not be noticed and walked toward the building with a growing sense of dread. My curiosity pushed me to investigate the truth behind his suspicious behavior. I reached the side of the house and looked through the window. The sight that met my eyes was far more terrifying than any scenario I had imagined.
I saw my husband standing in the living room next to a young woman holding a baby. It became clear that my mother in law had never truly accepted me. She had spent months persuading my husband to leave me for the neighbor’s daughter. To my horror, I discovered they had already entered into a secret marriage and shared a two month old child. My husband had been leading a second life while pretending to be a devoted son. His mother orchestrated the situation because she wanted her son to be with someone else. The weight of the deception was heavy as I realized how long he had played both sides. He used his mother’s home as an excuse to spend time with his new wife and child.
