The highly anticipated wedding day eventually arrived under a beautifully clear Charleston sky while I peacefully stayed home reading a novel on my porch. Late that morning Susan called to dramatically report that the entire celebration was turning into an absolute disaster. Vanessa had assumed the extremely wealthy Blake family would easily replace all the canceled vendors but they completely refused to open their wallets. She managed to secure a much smaller ceremony venue but continued falsely promising all two hundred distinguished guests that they would attend the luxurious beachfront reception. Unfortunately that highly coveted property had already accepted another lucrative reservation the moment my contract was voided. When the confused guests arrived at the beach resort the staff explained that absolutely no reception was booked under my daughters name. Many frustrated guests departed the area in complete disgust. Meanwhile the hastily hired replacement caterer firmly refused to serve any dinner without receiving final payment upfront and the groom completely lacked the necessary funds. At half past two Vanessa called me in a state of absolute hysterical panic begging for my intervention. She cried that all her guests were leaving and demanded that I fulfill my maternal duty by paying for everything.
I experienced an unexpected wave of total calm as I reminded her that my maternal duty was to love her rather than constantly purchase her basic respect. Despite her desperate sobbing and intense pleas for me to save her from public humiliation I remembered our devastating lunch conversation and firmly ended the call. Later that evening Susan forwarded me several heartbreaking photographs showing Vanessa standing entirely alone outside a cheap replacement venue while Christopher angrily argued with his furious parents. The actual marriage ceremony occurred but the incredibly lavish reception they had promised their guests never materialized. Over the following week Christopher and his parents desperately attempted to publicly blame me but my attorney quickly produced the legally dated cancellation notices. The false accusations eventually faded into obscurity while Vanessa and Christopher experienced worsening financial disputes because he had borrowed heavily for emergency expenses. Six months after the wedding Vanessa officially separated from him. Meanwhile I happily invested my remaining funds into rapidly expanding my event business and establishing a special hospitality training program for struggling single mothers. Nearly a year later my daughter appeared unexpectedly at my office to admit her cruel selfishness and I accepted her tearful apology knowing I finally regained my self respect.
