For three months I noticed a sharp and foul odor coming from the side of the bed where my husband Michael slept. The damp and moldy scent clung to our sheets and made sleeping nearly impossible. I tried washing everything in hot water and spraying essential oils but nothing removed the terrible smell. Michael grew increasingly irritated whenever I tried to clean the bed or investigate the mattress. When he finally left for a three day business trip I decided I could no longer ignore the situation. I dragged the mattress to the middle of the room and used a cutter to slice open the fabric. A terrible wave of stench burst out of the mattress the moment I opened it.
Instead of finding spoiled food or a dead animal inside the bed I discovered a tightly sealed plastic bag covered in damp mold. My hands shook as I opened the bag and found thick stacks of cash bound with rubber bands. Beneath the damp money I uncovered hidden envelopes with receipts and a small notebook detailing secret financial transactions. I felt completely confused and feared my husband was involved in something illegal or hiding a second family. Then I opened another envelope containing photographs of thin children standing near a small building. The back of the pictures indicated this was the San Pedro Community School in Cebu.
I eventually found a letter from Michael explaining the secret he had been keeping from me for years. He wrote that the hidden money was perfectly legal and was part of a lifelong dream to help poor children in his hometown of Cebu. Knowing many of his childhood friends could not afford education he had secretly purchased land to build a free school. He hid the project because he worried I would think it was too expensive or entirely unrealistic. The terrible smell in our bedroom came from his old documents and the damp cash he stored in the mattress to keep the school running. He expressed deep regret for getting angry when I cleaned and asked me to support his lifelong dream.
When Michael returned home I confronted him about the letter and asked why he had kept me out of his dream from the beginning. He became emotional and I hugged him tightly while feeling a deep sense of peace for the first time in months. A few weeks later we traveled together to Cebu and visited the newly completed San Pedro Free Community School. Smiling children and grateful teachers greeted us at the gates of the beautiful new building. Michael held my hand and asked if I would help him run the incredible facility he had built. I happily agreed to help him support the children and realized that his hidden secret was actually a beautiful gift to the world.
