The lead federal agent entered my home and immediately demanded access to our basement, ignoring Ethan when he falsely claimed there was nothing important hidden downstairs. Ethan was completely horrified when I stepped past him and used my own handprint to unlock the heavy iron door at the end of the hallway, revealing that I had possessed access to his secret sanctuary for months. We descended the stairs and discovered a massive climate controlled facility filled with advanced computer servers and endless rows of neatly organized filing cabinets. Daniel explained that Ethan had not merely committed financial fraud but had built a massive blackmail archive containing decades of surveillance records on politicians, judges, and even his own family members. Ethan finally confessed that he learned these ruthless tactics from his late father, a respected judge who originally built the terrifying leverage system to control everyone around him. My husband admitted his immense fear of his father had driven him to continue this deeply corrupt family legacy.
Federal agents quickly broke the lock on a secure steel cabinet in the center of the room, ignoring Ethan as he desperately warned them that some secrets could never be undone. Inside the cabinet they found an older archive of manual paper records, and resting at the very top was a sealed envelope addressed to me in the handwriting of my late father. My hands grew completely cold as I read the single sentence inside the letter, which stated that my father had desperately tried and failed to stop Ethan from becoming just like his corrupt predecessor. The envelope also contained a heavy metal key attached to a tag that indicated the existence of a second deeper level to the underground archive. As the back wall of the room began to mechanically unlock and reveal a dark hidden staircase, Ethan called out my name in a final desperate warning. We stepped forward into the darkness anyway, fully prepared to uncover whatever terrifying secrets were still waiting beneath the floorboards.
