Despite having 7 kids, John Wayne was buried in private & his grave went unmarked for 20 years

Posted on January 14, 2025 By Andrew Wright

John Wayne, born Marion Morrison on May 26, 1907, in Winterset, Iowa, gained his iconic nickname “Duke” from his family’s Airedale Terrier. His family moved to Glendale, California, when he was nine, shaping his values through early challenges. At Glendale High School, Wayne excelled in football, academics, and theater, sparking his passion for acting. A football injury ended his NFL dreams, leading him to work in movie studios as a prop man and extra. Mentored by director John Ford, he earned his first major role in the 1930 film The Big Trail, where he adopted the stage name John Wayne, crafted by Fox Studios for its classical resonance, partly inspired by “Mad Anthony” Wayne.
