A football injury ended his NFL dreams, leading him to work in movie studios as a prop man and extra. Mentored by director John Ford, he earned his first major role in the 1930 film The Big Trail, where he adopted the stage name John Wayne, crafted by Fox Studios for its classical resonance, partly inspired by “Mad Anthony” Wayne.
