Beloved UK Comedy Icon Prunella Scales Passes Away at 93

Posted on October 29, 2025 By Andrew Wright

The television world bids farewell to Prunella Scales, the gifted British actress who brought unforgettable life to Sybil Fawlty in the timeless sitcom Fawlty Towers. She died peacefully at home in London at the age of 93, her family announced, surrounded by love after a storied career of nearly seven decades.

Scales’s sons, Samuel and Joseph, shared a statement: “Our darling mother Prunella Scales died peacefully at home in London yesterday. She was 93. Although dementia forced her retirement from a remarkable acting career of nearly 70 years, she continued to live at home.” Her family revealed that she had been watching Fawlty Towers the previous day, a poignant reflection of her deep connection to the role.

Her husband of more than six decades, veteran actor Timothy West, passed away in November of last year. Together they shared two sons, a stepdaughter, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and featured as a couple in the hit series Great Canal Journeys, turning their real-life journey into creative work.

Over her career, Scales became one of Britain’s most cherished comic talents. Her breakout role in The Marriage Lines (1961-66) paved the way for her star turn in Fawlty Towers, where she matched height and eccentricity across from John Cleese as Basil. Her signature shouts of “BASIL!” and sharp-tongued timing cemented Sybil as one of television’s most memorable characters.

But Scales’s range wasn’t limited to sitcoms. She earned a BAFTA nomination for her haunting portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in A Question of Attribution (1991), and later shared honest insights into aging and dementia on screen. Her open-hearted presence with Timothy West became a symbol of enduring love and dignity in the face of illness.

Tributes poured in across the UK and beyond. Broadcaster Gyles Brandreth called her “a funny, intelligent, interesting, gifted human being.” The Alzheimer’s Society recognised her for shining a light on dementia at a time when it is the UK’s biggest killer. Scales leaves behind a legacy built on laughter, compassion and resilience — two qualities she shared with audiences for decades. 💐

May you rest in peace, Prunella Scales — thank you for the laughter, the memories and the warmth you brought into our lives.
