My name is Lydia and I was thirty five years old when my daughter Elise turned nine. She is a generous child with a heart that makes her share everything. After my first marriage ended I was worried about her stability and I was cautious when I met Matthew. He turned out to be a wonderful man who treated Elise like his own daughter. He helped her with math and taught her how to ride a bicycle with great patience. The most emotional moment happened in a grocery store when Elise called him her father. Matthew was so moved that he cried and told me it was the greatest honor of his life.
Elise was very excited for her birthday and requested a large pink cake. I promised her that I would bake it myself instead of buying one. I spent the entire day before the party measuring flour and whipping fresh chocolate cream for the layers. I filled the cake with homemade strawberry filling and covered it in the soft pink frosting that she loved. I spent a long time decorating it with sugar pearls and buttercream flowers before storing it away. When Elise saw the finished cake she was amazed and said it looked like magic. I placed it in the refrigerator and felt a deep sense of satisfaction.
The morning of the party was filled with joy as Matthew and Elise hung pink streamers together. Our house looked like a sparkling wonderland and many friends arrived to celebrate her special day. Everything was going perfectly until Elise went into the kitchen for some lemonade. A sudden scream echoed through the house and I ran to find the cake box open on the counter. My beautiful creation was completely crushed and the birthday message was smeared. The mother of Matthew named Geraldine was sitting nearby and admitted she had destroyed the cake on purpose. She explained that she believed Elise did not belong because they were not related by blood.
Matthew overheard the cruel comments and immediately stepped in to defend his daughter. He told his mother that Elise belonged to him and that love was more important than biology. He explained that cruelty had no place in our home and asked his mother to leave. After Geraldine left the house felt much lighter as if a toxic cloud had been removed. Matthew quickly went to a bakery to buy a new cake so the celebration could continue. We sang to Elise and she made a wish before smiling at her friends again.
