What a wrestler has to choose between faith, fairness, and sportsmanship

Posted on December 2, 2024 By Andrew Wright

When high school wrestler Brendan Johnson dropped out of a fight at a state tournament in 2018, he caused a lot of trouble. He didn’t make the choice because he was hurt or sick; he made it because of his Christian beliefs and ideals.

A student at Classical Academy named Brendan was set to wrestle a woman named Jaslynn Gallegos. He didn’t want to compete against her, though, because the sport was so rough. Brendan said that he didn’t make his choice because he didn’t respect Jaslynn or her skills, but because of his own morals and beliefs.

Brendan still managed to finish sixth in the event, even though he chose to forfeit the game. On the other hand, Jaslynn came in fourth, and another woman fighter came in fifth.

Even though Jaslynn didn’t agree with Brendan’s choice, she accepted his right to make it. She made it clear that her gender did not affect who she was as a wrestler and that she was happy to compete in the sport she loved.

People are talking more about the role of faith and morals in sports after Brendan’s choice. Some people praised Brendan for standing up for what he believed in, but others didn’t like that he gave up the match.
