My name is Rachel and I went to the local supermarket to purchase groceries for my mother who was recovering from a recent surgery. I had temporarily stepped away from organizing large corporate galas to care for her and was only managing smaller events. While picking up milk I overheard a desperate plea coming from the refrigerated section. An elderly woman named Margaret was begging for a single discounted turkey to make soup for her sick grandson. A wealthy woman named Beatrice had loaded all twelve of the discounted turkeys into her shopping cart. I recognized Beatrice immediately because her family owned numerous apartment complexes and car dealerships around our town. Margaret pleaded for just one turkey and even offered to pay ten dollars but Beatrice snatched the final bird away and refused to share. I stepped in to confront Beatrice about taking every single sale item away from a sick child. Beatrice dismissed my concerns and arrogantly told me to mind my own business while boasting about her family status. I immediately flagged down the store manager to report the situation while Beatrice continued to roll her eyes and flaunt her wealth.
As Beatrice marched away with her cart full of poultry a sudden announcement echoed over the supermarket speakers. A commanding voice addressed Beatrice directly and advised her to remember her own boastful words about her family status. Color completely drained from her face when an older gentleman walked down the aisle accompanied by the store manager. It was Walter who owned the supermarket chain and served as the chairman of their family charitable foundation. Walter also happened to be the father in law of Beatrice. He demanded an explanation for her shameful behavior and scolded her for humiliating a struggling grandmother over discounted meat. I made sure to interject and confirm to Walter that Beatrice had callously stated a sick child was not her problem. Several other shoppers raised their hands to verify my account of the incident. Walter expressed deep disappointment and revealed this was not the first time he had warned her about treating people poorly. He instructed the manager to confiscate all twelve turkeys and donate them to the local community food pantry. Walter then promised to provide Margaret with completely free groceries to help feed her sick grandson.
Beatrice attempted to threaten Walter by saying she would call her husband but her plan backfired spectacularly. Walter used the public setting to announce a complete withdrawal of his financial support for her luxurious lifestyle. He declared an immediate end to paying for their massive mortgage and luxury vehicles as well as her extravagant vacations and failing restaurant. Beatrice was absolutely horrified as Walter demanded she cancel her upcoming holiday and start paying her own bills. Seeing a promotional brochure in her cart for an upcoming charity banquet she was supposed to host gave me a sudden burst of inspiration. I quietly suggested a new plan for the evening event to Walter and he immediately agreed to implement my idea. He informed a panicked Beatrice that the charity banquet would proceed as scheduled but I would be stepping in to organize the entire affair. Beatrice was furious and accused him of blackmail but Walter insisted this was her only chance to prove she actually cared about philanthropy. She stormed out of the supermarket while Walter and I began planning a practical lesson in humility for her fancy event.
