My shift as a nurse was interrupted by a phone call that would change my entire perspective on my family. Officer Benny Reyes contacted me to say there was a situation involving my seventeen year old son Logan and urged me to return home immediately. I was terrified because I had spent the last two years worrying about Logan going down the wrong path. I left my hospital shift in a state of absolute panic without even clocking out or changing my scrubs. I drove home recklessly while imagining the absolute worst scenarios involving police cars and arrests. Every single minute of that drive felt like an eternity as I pictured my son in some terrible trouble. Logan had a couple of minor incidents in the past like a bicycle race mishap and skipping school for a soccer game but nothing serious. However living in a small town meant people talked and watched him closely after his father passed away. I felt completely overwhelmed with fear that I was losing my boy to the streets and could not do anything to stop it.
The root of my deep anxiety stemmed from the sudden loss of my husband Daniel two years earlier. Daniel suffered a fatal heart attack on the side of a highway and died completely alone because nobody stopped to help him. After that tragic loss Logan became incredibly quiet and started taking solitary walks late at night which left me constantly worried about his well being. He was deeply devoted to his three year old brother Andrew picking him up from daycare and caring for him without a single complaint yet I still feared Logan was hiding a dark secret. When I finally pulled into my driveway after my frantic rush from the hospital my heart nearly stopped at the sight before me. Officer Reyes was standing right there in front of my house cradling a sleeping Andrew in his arms. My toddler was safe and perfectly fine in his mismatched rain boots but I had no idea where Logan was or what had happened. The officer calmly directed me inside the house to explain the situation rather than giving me details out in the driveway.
I walked into my kitchen to find Logan standing there looking shaken but entirely unharmed. My initial anger and confusion quickly melted away as Officer Reyes carefully explained the astonishing reality of what had actually unfolded that morning. Logan had not committed a crime or gotten into any trouble whatsoever. Instead he had taken Andrew for a morning walk down the street to look at a neighborhood dog when they passed the home of Walter Henson our seventy eight year old neighbor. Logan heard a sudden noise and discovered the elderly man collapsed on his front porch swing. Showing incredible presence of mind Logan instructed his little brother to hold tightly to a nearby fence and stay completely out of the way. My teenage son then immediately called emergency services and ran to Mr. Henson to check his vital signs. When he realized our elderly neighbor had stopped breathing entirely Logan sprang into action to try and save the man’s life right there on the wooden porch boards.
