Confronting My Nephew After He Secretly Sold Hunting Rights To My Property

Posted on October 16, 2026 By Andrew Wright

I sat freezing in my late husband Wes’s deer stand when Richard Miller and his teenage son Evan arrived from Omaha expecting a guided autumn hunt. Richard politely explained that my nephew Cody had charged them six hundred dollars for a trip lasting two days, claiming he had inherited the entire eighty acres from his uncle. I had to break the difficult news that Cody did not own the property and had absolutely no right to lease it out to strangers. I explained how Wes had always welcomed Cody to hunt there as a boy, but love for a nephew did not equate to transferring property deeds. Richard provided digital receipts showing two separate payments sent directly to Cody’s bank account for private family property access. Seeing the undeniable proof of my nephew’s deceit felt colder than the freezing morning air. I informed Richard that while they had been terribly misled, I could not allow them to hunt on my land today. Richard was embarrassed but completely understanding, and he prepared to take his disappointed son home while I telephoned my nephew to demand his immediate presence at the property to explain himself.

When Cody arrived at the property in his truck, he attempted to pass the situation off as a simple misunderstanding among close friends. I presented him with Richard’s payment receipts and forced him to admit in front of the disappointed hunters that he had lied about owning the land. Cody tried to justify his actions by claiming he desperately needed money for rent and vehicle repairs, conveniently ignoring the numerous times I had already paid his bills over the past three years. I reminded him that looking at a grieving widow and deciding her property was available for his taking was completely unacceptable behavior. After Richard and Evan peacefully left the premises, I showed Cody the legal property deed bearing my name and demanded he leave his gate key on the tree stump. He finally looked frightened realizing the severe legal consequences of his actions. Soon after he drove away, Deputy Schmitt arrived to thoroughly document the incident. I provided the deputy with all the digital receipts and messages, making it clear that I wanted a full investigation so every deceived hunter could eventually get their stolen money back.

Later that same morning, I received a frantic phone call from my sister Linda, who was furious and ready to defend her son at all costs. She tried to excuse his shameful behavior by citing his difficult childhood and reminding me how much Wes had loved him, but I firmly reminded her that experiencing hardship does not give anyone permission to defraud innocent people. The next day, Linda visited my home to continue defending Cody, clinging to the false belief that Wes had promised him the land. I presented her with the legal property deed and Wes’s official will, proving beyond any doubt that her son had completely fabricated the entire inheritance story. That same afternoon, Cody finally called me to confess the true magnitude of his ongoing deception. He admitted to illegally charging eleven different hunting groups since the previous season, collecting over nine thousand dollars in total. When I firmly pressed him on where the stolen money actually went, he confessed that in addition to paying his overdue monthly bills, he had selfishly spent six hundred and forty dollars on an expensive new rifle scope.
