My mother in law Grace removed our bedroom door from its hinges in the middle of the night while my husband Harold and I were fast asleep. Harold found her in the hallway and casually leaned the heavy door against the wall before calmly repeating her own flawed logic back to her about how families should not have barriers. Grace was utterly speechless for a few seconds before demanding that he put the door back in its proper place. Harold firmly refused and pointed out that she had been continuously crossing our boundaries by going through his personal desk, handling my medication, and walking into our room without knocking. Instead of apologizing, Grace deflected the blame onto me and accused me of changing her son and isolating him from his family. She brought up how he used to tell her absolutely everything when he was a teenager and claimed that a mother and son should never have secrets. Harold firmly reminded her that he was forty one years old and that his marriage was completely separate from his relationship with his mother.
Grace quickly shifted her strategy to playing the victim by crying and bringing up all the sacrifices she made raising him entirely alone. She claimed she was being treated like an unwanted guest in the home of her son, which prompted Harold to firmly clarify that she was indeed merely a guest in our shared house. Furious at this undeniable reality, Grace marched right into the guest room and angrily began packing her suitcase while dramatically complaining about being thrown out in the dark. Harold held his ground completely and even removed the door to her guest room to prove a point about consistency in her strange demands for a lack of privacy. Grace threatened to sleep in her car at a hotel, fully expecting Harold to beg her to stay and apologize for setting basic boundaries. Instead of falling for her obvious guilt trip, Harold simply accepted her decision to leave and passionately expressed his complete exhaustion from spending his entire adult life trying to avoid upsetting her. Realizing that her manipulative tactics were completely failing for the very first time, Grace suddenly abandoned her dramatic departure and quietly agreed to stay until morning.
To keep the peace for the remaining hours of the night, Harold accommodated her final request by hanging a thick comforter over her doorway, and we ended up hanging another blanket over our own bedroom entrance before finally going to sleep around two in the morning. We were abruptly awakened at six thirty by the unmistakable sound of our office printer running downstairs. We rushed down to find Grace fully dressed and standing over a large pile of our private financial documents spread widely across the desk belonging to Harold. She had spent the early morning hours searching through our unlocked filing cabinets and uncovered an old bank statement of mine from three years prior to our marriage. The document showed a large deposit of thirty eight thousand dollars that my grandmother had given me from a house sale. Grace proudly presented this financial record as proof that I was hiding things from Harold, pointing out that I had originally claimed the gift was only twenty thousand dollars for our home down payment. She eagerly tried to use this discrepancy to paint me as a deceitful wife who was secretly stealing from our future together.
