My phone rang on a Tuesday afternoon with an unexpected call from my husband Luke asking me to come to Saint Michael Memorial Hospital immediately because there was a baby waiting. He refused to explain the details over the phone and his strained breathing made me drop my cleaning supplies and rush out the door. We had been married for eleven years and our busy household was already filled with three energetic sons named Mason who was nine, Hunter who was seven, and Toby who was four. Despite our deep love for our boys, we had always dreamed of having a little girl to complete our family. However, severe medical emergencies during my last delivery forced my doctors to advise against any future pregnancies because my body could not handle another labor. We were told another pregnancy could end my life and leave our young sons without a mother. We had packed away all our hopes for a daughter in a sealed cardboard box in the garage.
I arrived at the maternity ward terrified and found Luke standing in the corridor with red eyes and a frantic expression. Through a nearby glass window, I noticed a tiny infant moving under a pink blanket in a plastic bassinet. When Luke begged me to sit down and hear his story before making any decisions, my mind immediately raced to the worst possible conclusion that he had fathered a child with another woman. Luke looked absolutely horrified at my assumption and quickly explained the real situation involving his high school sweetheart named Naomi. He had not spoken a single word to her in over a decade since they broke up as young adults. He explained that Naomi was seven months pregnant when her spouse suddenly left her without warning. She had gone into premature labor alone in her apartment that morning and delivered a tiny six pound baby girl at the hospital before suffering massive and fatal complications following the delivery.
Before Naomi slipped away completely, the hospital staff had gently asked if there was anyone they could contact on her behalf since she had no remaining family. Naomi was barely conscious but she kept repeating the full name of my husband over and over until she lost her speech entirely. The social workers checked her wallet and found an ancient emergency contact slip containing his information which prompted their sudden call to his cell phone. Luke had rushed straight to the hospital but was unable to see her before she passed away. He explained that the biological father had already been contacted and immediately signed documents waiving all his parental rights to the child. The newborn was headed for temporary foster care until distant relatives could be found. With tears in his eyes, Luke asked if I would be willing to step forward together so we could bring this helpless little girl home and raise her as our own permanent daughter.
