I sat in the examination room holding my infant son Toby while his fever raged dangerously high. Dr Vance examined him while echoing a sentiment I had heard repeatedly over the past few months. He suggested that as a new mother I was simply worrying more than necessary. Across the room my mother in law Evelyn offered a small satisfied smile while my husband Julian quickly agreed with the doctor. Julian stated that I had been overly anxious about everything since Toby was born. I felt completely exhausted and decided not to argue with them as I gently rocked my baby. For months my family had dismissed every concern I raised about my son. Whenever I checked on him during the night or asked people to wash their hands before holding him I was called dramatic. Julian constantly told me to relax whenever I felt something was wrong. Their continuous dismissal had eventually made me question my own judgment and wonder if my exhaustion was making me imagine problems that did not actually exist.
As we waited for the examination to finish my seven year old daughter Lily suddenly raised her teddy bear and caught the attention of Dr Vance. She quietly asked if she should reveal what her grandmother had been giving Toby instead of his prescribed medicine. The room went completely still as the doctor lowered his stethoscope and asked her to explain. Lily explained that she had seen her grandmother pour out the real medicine and replace it with something different. Evelyn immediately leaned forward and claimed that Lily was just a child who had misunderstood the situation. Lily firmly stood her ground and pulled an amber prescription bottle from beneath the denim overalls of her teddy bear. She explained that she had found the real medicine in the trash. Dr Vance took the bottle and noticed that the medication Toby was supposed to take for days was almost entirely untouched. He immediately pressed the call button and asked a nurse to move Toby into a treatment room for a full medical review.
Julian stepped closer and questioned if such extreme measures were necessary but Dr Vance ignored him and asked Lily to describe the other medicine. Lily recalled that it was a purple bottle kept near her grandmother and marked for nighttime use. Evelyn sighed loudly and defended her actions by claiming she was only trying to help because I barely slept. Julian supported his mother by stating she had raised three children and knew how to care for infants. I calmly requested that the doctor document everything Lily was saying and insisted on answering questions about Toby myself. When Julian protested I demanded to know if he was aware that his mother had been giving our baby a different medication. Julian looked away from me and his silence confirmed my worst fears. Evelyn argued that they were helping me because I was too exhausted and panicked over every little thing. Lily then revealed that her grandmother had administered the secret medicine multiple times late at night while Julian watched.
