I was eight when our parents died and my nineteen year old brother Matthew became my guardian. One week he was a normal teenager and the next he was signing school forms. He worked long hours and turned terrifying problems into funny games so I felt safe. When Ryan proposed, there was no question Matthew would walk me down the aisle. His parents Selena and Jacob were extremely unhappy. They said guests would stare because my brother has dwarfism and complained he would ruin our wedding photographs. Jacob claimed paying for the wedding gave them control over how everything looked. Ryan told his parents to keep their money if Matthew was not welcome. They backed down publicly but continuously made cruel suggestions. Selena told the photographer to avoid taking full length pictures of our family. They even suggested my brother should use a hidden side entrance.
On the morning of my wedding day, I found Matthew nervously adjusting his suit and straining to make himself appear taller. His hands were trembling as he asked whether I was absolutely certain I wanted him to walk me down the aisle. I promised him he was the only person I ever wanted beside me. We started walking down the aisle together toward the altar. Halfway down, I heard Selena laugh behind her paper program. She whispered that the photographer could easily crop the picture later to hide my brother. Anger rushed through me, but Matthew tightened his hand around mine and quietly instructed me to keep walking forward. At the reception, the unpleasant comments from my new family continued. I was finally ready to confront my new in laws about their terrible behavior. Before I could reach their table, Matthew stood up with a microphone and raised his glass to quiet the massive room. He began his toast by politely thanking Selena and Jacob for choosing such a grand renovated venue. Then he revealed to the entire crowd that he had actually worked in this very building long before it became a fancy wedding hall.
Matthew explained to the surprised crowd that shortly after our parents died, this glamorous building had been a regular working hotel. He described how he cleaned the massive banquet rooms through the night while his eight year old sister waited safely in a tiny employee room. I remembered those long nights very clearly, affectionately calling our setup Hotel Matthew. Our nights were filled with eating simple crackers, finishing homework, and sleeping on office chairs pushed together to form a small bed. Matthew protected me so completely that I truly believed we were just having wonderful overnight adventures. He raised his glass toward Ryan and firmly instructed my new husband to take good care of me. Matthew wished that wherever we ended up living would always feel perfectly safe and warm. As he finished speaking his beautiful words, two hundred guests across the enormous ballroom fell completely silent. People all over the huge room reached for their napkins to wipe tears from their eyes. Two hundred glasses rose into the air to honor the incredible man who had sacrificed his youth for me.
