Heartless In Laws Sold Our Family Dog So I Called Police

Posted on June 22, 2026 By Andrew Wright

I came home from work to find my eleven year old daughter Sophie in tears outside her bedroom. A harsh note taped to her door explained that my in laws Brenda and Gordon had given away her beloved dog Sadie. They claimed the decision was made because my niece Madison was afraid of the animal. I went downstairs to confront them and they dismissively told me they had rehomed Sadie with a nice family to keep the peace. They completely ignored my daughters grief and insisted that I should simply accept their rules because we lived under their roof. Instead of arguing further I chose to handle the situation quietly and effectively.

This painful incident was the final straw after years of enduring unequal treatment in their house. My husband Colin and I had moved in temporarily years ago but ended up staying and paying a significant portion of their household bills. Brenda always favored Madison over Sophie and showered her with elaborate parties while dismissing my daughter entirely. Sadie was not just a pet but a highly trained assistance dog that originally belonged to my late mother. She had even saved Sophie from a serious fall when she was a toddler. My in laws hated the dog and used Madisons complaints as an excuse to rid our home of the only creature that provided Sophie with absolute comfort.

I kept my daughter home from school the next morning and began a methodical search for our missing dog. I contacted the veterinarian and the microchip company to report Sadie as stolen before turning to local community groups online. A stranger eventually sent me a screenshot of an advertisement listing Sadie for a large fee alongside a phone number that belonged to Gordon. I immediately contacted the buyer named Martha who was horrified to learn the truth and quickly agreed to return the dog. We met in a parking lot that afternoon where Sadie happily ran to us and Martha and Jim handed over the paperwork proving they had paid Gordon two thousand five hundred dollars.

Armed with undeniable proof I went straight to the local police station to file a formal report. Officer Green arrived at our house the next morning to inform my stunned in laws that selling stolen property carried serious legal consequences. Colin finally saw his parents clearly and firmly told them we were moving out because of their cruel deception. We relocated to our own peaceful apartment shortly after and left Brenda and Gordon to face the harsh reality of their actions. Without our financial support they were eventually forced to sell their large house and move into a cramped rental while burdened with criminal records and mandatory fines.
