My twelve year old son Eli came home soaking wet after giving away his beloved blue umbrella to a crying pregnant woman at a bus stop. I was initially upset because that umbrella was the last gift Eli ever received from his late father Darren before his passing. When Eli explained that the pregnant stranger was freezing and distressed he reminded me that his father always taught him to help others in need without hesitation. My anger completely melted away and I realized Darren would be incredibly proud of his compassionate son.
Three mornings later I walked outside to find our front lawn completely covered with forty seven umbrellas and numbered white boxes. Several neighbors were filming our house which caused me to aggressively demand they respect our privacy and put their phones away. I cautiously opened the first numbered box and screamed when I saw Darren’s beloved blue umbrella neatly folded inside. It included a note from the pregnant woman Jenelle who explained she posted a public thank you message on Facebook that quickly went viral. She apologized profusely for unintentionally causing the massive spectacle at our private home.
Mr Collins the local bus driver stepped forward and confessed he organized the massive display before sunrise with two church volunteers. He explained that community members were deeply moved by Jenelle’s post and flooded the bus depot with umbrellas and generous gifts for Eli. The remaining boxes contained incredible rewards including an ice cream gift card a shoe store voucher a skatepark pass and coins from a young child. Eli graciously suggested we use the overwhelming donations to create a public station at the bus stop so nobody would ever be caught in the rain again.
With the approval of the local transit office we established the Route 47 Rain Rack right next to the bus shelter. Mr Collins painted a sturdy rack blue and the community stocked it with umbrellas waterproof ponchos winter gloves and prepaid bus passes. The rack prominently features a brass plaque dedicating the community project to Darren and his original blue umbrella. Eli kept his fathers precious umbrella safely at home while placing a brand new blue one on the public rack for others to share. I finally realized that Darren’s greatest lasting gift was actually the incredible compassion he successfully instilled in our young son.
