I (30F) married my husband, Ryan (31M), a year ago. Unfortunately, our wedding was a mess because his mom, Linda (55F), took over everything. Even our honeymoon wasn’t spared — she and my FIL “surprised” us by showing up at the same resort.
I promised myself our first anniversary would finally be just us.
I made a reservation at a beautiful restaurant, got dressed up, and anticipated a memorable evening. But once we were seated, the waiter mentioned a rearranged menu. A quarter of an hour later, Linda and Mark arrived, acting as though the night was theirs.
Linda (smirking): “WE ORDERED AHEAD. YOU’LL THANK ME. THE STEAK HERE IS FAR TOO FATTY, SO I MADE SURE YOU GOT THE CHICKEN. LESS… HEAVY.”
She made comments all through dinner.
Linda: “THAT DRESS IS… BRAVE. BUT WITH THE EXTRA WEIGHT, SOMETHING DARKER WOULD BE SLIMMING.”
When it was time for dessert, I was surprised not to receive the chocolate cake I ordered. Instead, a fruit tart arrived.
Linda (smug): “I CANCELED THE CAKE. MARK PREFERS FRUIT TART. IT’S HEALTHIER.”
The last blow came with the bill—it was set down in front of me.
Waiter: “The reservation was made under your card on file, ma’am.”
Ryan avoided eye contact. Linda sipped her wine.
Linda: “WELL, IT’S YOUR ANNIVERSARY DINNER. OF COURSE, YOU HAVE TO PAY.”
My “special night” became her moment — and I was footing the bill. I was furious.
