The Iconic Batgirl Who Captivated Generations: A Glimpse Into Her Later Years!

Posted on May 14, 2025 By Andrew Wright

Yvonne Craig (1937–2015) was an American actress and ballet dancer best known for playing Batgirl in the 1960s Batman TV series. Born in Illinois and raised in Ohio, she trained as a ballerina before turning to acting, with early roles in Gidget (1959) and It Happened at the World’s Fair (1963) alongside Elvis Presley. Her breakout came in 1967 as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, making her one of TV’s first female superheroes. Performing her own stunts, Craig helped redefine women’s roles in action series, inspiring a generation of young viewers.

Craig also appeared in shows like Star Trek, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and The Wild Wild West. Though she never became a leading lady, her memorable guest roles won her a loyal fan base.

After retiring in the 1980s, she worked in real estate and became an advocate for women’s rights and public health.
