David Letterman’s question that left Jennifer Aniston very uncomfortable

Posted on March 20, 2025 By Andrew Wright

David Letterman, once celebrated for his sharp wit and charisma in late-night television, has faced renewed scrutiny over some of his past interviews, particularly one with actress Jennifer Aniston. During a 2006 appearance on The Late Show to promote her film The Break-Up, Letterman fixated on Aniston’s legs, complimenting them excessively and prompting the cameraman to zoom in. Despite Aniston’s discomfort, she maintained her composure, laughing off the remarks, but the awkwardness lingered. Letterman’s fixation on her appearance was compounded by his probing questions about her rumored relationships, further escalating the discomfort. This interview, along with another in 1998 where Letterman made an inappropriate physical gesture, has resurfaced as an example of the show’s once-celebrated humor now being viewed as problematic.

While Aniston has not publicly criticized these moments, their recent reexamination highlights how they haven’t aged well. Despite the discomfort, Aniston demonstrated remarkable poise, even returning to the show in 2008. During this appearance, a lighter moment involving a Brooks Brothers tie exchange between her and Letterman helped shift the focus away from her physical appearance. However, as the viral images from that appearance suggest, viewers still seemed more interested in her looks than the content of the conversation. These resurfaced interviews now spark renewed conversations about the boundaries of comedy and the evolving nature of late-night television.
